How, bout, DAT!?

The Colt's might be the best team in the, NFL. And they have the best QB. But tonight, the coolest city in America won the Super Bowl at time when they needed to. After all the stuff they have been through, couldn't happen to a nicer city, or state.

I spent New Year's Eve, 2008 in NOLA, and it was awesome. Those people don't need a reason to party, so I'm sure, Rue Bourbon is a mass of drunken, happy, people tonight.

Basketball teams come and go (witness the, "Jazz"), they have never gotten above AAA in baseball. Hockey? Forget it, ECHL, tops. College football is, Tulane, and they are lucky to be in, Conference USA, and host the Bowl Game featuring the champs of the, Sun Belt Conference, and some CUSA team.

They have the, Saint's, and sometimes the, Super Bowl, and the, Sugar Bowl every year. Now, they have a National championship team. Good for them.

NOLA is an AWESOME city, and I want to go back as soon as I can. And I'm happy for them. Geaux, Saints, and this might have been the best Super Bowl since the JETS beat the Colts. But the Colts were in a different city then.

And that's the reason COLLEGE football is so much BETTER than, PRO football. So be it. "Congrat's" NOLA! You're awesome.

Is that a REAL fire?

I'm officially, "Old". I hit 51 last Christmas Day, and now it's starting to come home. My son's soccer teammates parents are, mostly, 15 years younger than, Deb and I. I have tried to watch, "Saturday Night Live" the last two weeks, and don't find it funny. I prefer to spend my nights at home, and haven't been in a bar, at least in this town, for I don't know how many years.

I'm old. I'm also OK with it.

Tonight, my son had one of his friends over, and they were playing video games in the basement until I drove them up to another, "Soccer Head's" house for a while. And as we were leaving, his buddy looked hard at the fireplace in the living room, and actually said to me, "Is that a REAL fire? You can't tell any more with fires on computer screens and stuff!"

Blew me away. I've had a similar experience, though. We took our daughter to, Disney World in 1995. And after a few days, I could not tell if I was hearing, "Disney birds", or real birds all day. "Disney frogs", or real frogs, at night. But, real fire, is WARM!

Then again, if you stand close enough to a big, plasma, TV, it kicks off some heat, too. So I guess I could be up in the night.

I ran into an old friend today at a soccer work out session. He has a son younger than mine! And when he introduced him to me, he actually told the kid, "This is the goalie who stopped two PK's when we beat, Orem our senior year!" That was the best game, I ever played, in any sport. We beat them 1-3 at Murray Park, and they had won 39 games in a row! I once played a hockey game where I scored 4 goals, but the beating of, Orem was the best. It made my day. And I was glad my son was there to hear it.

Of course, what he remembered, and asked me about was, "Why did your friend, Allen call you, "Tiny"?" Probably because I'm OLD, and a lot bigger than I was when I could play soccer for a high school team! Kids.

Bruce Springsteen was SO right when he did, "Glory Days". The older I get, the better I was!

Geaux, Saints!

As my friends know, I don't usually give a hoot about PRO football. I prefer the college game. And I'm sure, Indianapolis is a fine town, full of wonderful people. And the Colts are a MACHINE! And they have the best quarterback in football. But this weekend, I'm rooting against them.

Because last years trip to, NOLA, for the Sugar bowl, "Bitch slap" of Alabama, and the whole, corrupt, BCS system by the Utes, convinced me that New Orleans is one of the finest cities anywhere.

I have done a little traveling, as you all know. DC, San Francisco, LA, Minneapolis, Havana, Detroit, Miami, Chicago, London, Paris, New York, Moab. I've seen em' all. And I have to say that as much as I was totally impressed by a week spent in New York City (and, white pizza! Awesome!) the only place I experienced a sense of awe like the first time I looked at Paris was in NOLA. It's old, next to the new. Exotic, yet comfortable. I felt totally at home there, but still in a strange, new world.

It sure isn't Salt Lake City when you come out of your hotel at nine in the morning, and a bunch of guys dressed like, Larry The Cable Guy walk by you with Bud Light's in hand and raise their beers to greet you with, "Roll Tide!"

Well, that kind of WAS, SLC during the Olympics, but it's gone back to usual now.

Anyway, It's a great town, and it's not too full of itself. Touring the town and seeing the destruction from, Katrina really brought that disaster, and the failure of the, Bush Administration home. I felt for those folks a lot more than, "Shrub" ever did.

Saturday night, the day after the Sugar bowl, Deb and I went to a restaurant on 8th and Canal, called, Mandina's. Old wood, lots of brass, no checks or credit cards and awesome food. We were wearing our, Utah shirts and there were two older couples at a table next to us and they came over and one of the gentlemen said to us, as he shook our hands, "We're real glad you all won last night and beat, Lou Saben. And how the hell did you find out about THIS place?" It was an awesome moment.

I told him I had an acquaintance that was originally from NOLA, and had advised us to go there (and several other places, that he forgot to advise me I needed a coat and tie to enjoy. Next time for sure) and had told me about Cafe DuMond, and Abita beer. Nice folks. But everyone in NOLA is nice!

So, at least for this weekend, this college football fan is a Saints fan. And for the people of New Orleans, this would mean a lot. I hope they get it. Geaux, Saints!

Oh, and, "Good bye, Lou, better get back quick to, Alabama. Ain't no love lost for you, in, Louisiana..., Them, Utes done kicked your ass, down on the, Bayou..." The BCS STILL sucks!

Retarded

Yesterday, Sarah Palin lost her mind, and called for, the, President's top advisor to resign because he used the word, "Retarded". Dispite the fact that she has, in the past, used the same word, to discribe her own child.

My friend, Barb Guy who writes for the, Tribune called for us all to quit using the word, Retarded in her column last Sunday.

When I was growing up, in the 60's and 70's (as was, Rham Emmanual), "Retarded" was the GOOD word for those folks! It used to be, "Mongoloyd".

I remember while doing an internship at, KUER at the University of Utah about the time NPR came into being, around 1978, a co-worker with a, "disabled"/"Mentally Challenged"/"Developmentally disabled" younger brother coming in late one day and saying, "Sorry I'm late, I was at camp with the, "tards and loids" this afternoon." And no one said anything about it. After all, it was HIS little brother. Who were, WE to question what he called them?

Now? Handicapped? Developmentally disabled? What's appropriate? My 21 year old daughter is Autistic. Can't get a job, doesn't have friends, but can drive her blind, mother around. Is she, developmentally disabled? Or just a wierd, socially maladjusted kid? I'm asking, I don't know?

Black People chose what we called them, after we quit calling them, "niggers", which for some strange reason, they WON'T quit calling themselves! Negro, Black, African American. What ever you want, I'll call you that if I have to discribe you other than to say, "My friend..." and just give your name, where your race isn't really pertinant.

I want a world where it doesn't matter. But as a former, COP, there are times when I had to say, "The suspect is AWM/ABM/ALM" (Adult, White, Male; Adult, Black, Male; Adult, Latino, Male for those of you not paying attention to life) because it's IMPORTANT to us catching the, "bad guy"!

Then, Rush Limbaugh goes on a rant about, "RETARDS!" Says it four times. Is, retards, BETTER than, retarded? Is it less offensive? See, "Tards and Loids" above. I'm betting not.

Sarah Pailin has NOT spoken out against him. Yet. Come on, Sarah! Let him have it! I can't wait.

Ain't going to happen. Because, Sarah Pailin is retarded! Sorry, Barb. I'm for keeping the word, because it's SO discriptive of people who are not suffering from any kind of a mental disorder, but just think so wrongly that they are like, Sarah Pailin.

Disabled can cover everyone from the mentally disabled, to my wife, who's losing her sight, and my daughter who's Autistic. Retarded is a good word for those who WON'T learn, dispite the ABILITY to. Like, Sarah Pailin, and all the, Republicans in the Congress and Senate.

new friend

OMG! I FB'd the comic, Lisa Landry and she actually talked to me on on FB tonight! Awesome. She is SO funny. Check out her web sight, and her on, "Comedy Central". Funny lady. I can't wait until she's appearing around here, (even as far away as Las Vegas) and, Deb and I are there! I like her as much as, Rita Rudner, and, Penn And Teller.

Breaking News! You can still buy guns in Amerika!

Here's a little news flash for my, Republican friends (who am I kidding? I have no, Republican friends!), I bought a big, stainless steel, powerful handgun this afternoon, and it took me less than 15 minutes!

I traded my dad's old, .35 REM, pump action, deer rifle (which was in great shape, not a mark on it. I just don't hunt. I'm not anti hunting, I agree with, Ron White. It's cold, and you have to get up early, and I don't want to do it) for $300, and my, "other" .40 Cal. semi automatic handgun I don't use for a $500, Ruger, .357, a box of ammo and a holster, and it cost me $73.

I was in and out of the gun store in less than a half an hour, even with filling in the paperwork. I gave them my drivers license and my concealed carry permit, and that's all they needed to give me a gun.

I didn't need a, Passport, or a, Birth Certificate. So buying a powerful handgun in this state is now easier than RENEWING your drivers license? Does no one else see the irony in this?

So, that being said, can we quit calling the, President a, "socialist", or a, "communist" (can any of you, "teabaggers" define either term?) or comparing him to, Hitler and put away the tea bags, and get on with giving us a national health care plan, and regulating the banks so they don't continue to ruin the country?

I'm just sayin...

Last Friday

Wow. Did the current President make the Republicans look like idiots at their lunch last week in Baltimore, or what? "Faux News" even quit covering it before it was over, since it made them look as stupid as they are.

Why are we still paying attention to the stupid people in our country? Fuck them. We need a national health plan. How do the dumb get this much credit? Sarah Palin? Dumber than a box of rocks.

"Faux News"? Totally bullshit. But the folks living in trailers, still believe it.

Land of the free, home of the stupid, it appears. I don't hate, America. I hate the people who think they own it, and are so stupid, that they don't read newspapers. Or books that they don't buy at, Costco.

And as for guns? I actually have, too many! I bought a .40 Cal. S&W, Sigma, semi auto back in the 90's so I could carry it for work, AND off duty! BIG pistol. Three 15 round magazines, when you could only buy 10 round magazines if you were NOT a COP. Glow in the dark, "night sights". This was a hell of a gun. Now? I don't need it, and I can't sell it.

My Department went to, Glock a few years later, and my friends bought mine for me when I retired. Glock 23, .40. Compact, shorter, easily concealable. And I hate to admit it, much more accurate than the, Sigma. At long range. Both pretty good to 15 feet. After that? Not so much.

I'm going to take my, Sigma and my dad's deer rifle (which I will NEVER use again) to the Pawn shop this week. I just looked them up on the Internet, and the Sigma is worth about $100 less than I paid for it, but that's OK. I don't need it. I have the, Glock.

The Remington? Not so much. It's a hot gun. And it's older than ME! It's worth almost $400! And it has a scope, which the Internet sight does not take into account. All quotes are, "without scope". So I'll ask more.

I want a .45. A 1912, Colt. Big assed gun. Or another, Ruger, Security Six 357. Like I had in college. Something like that.

Guns are good. Republicans are not. I buy guns to protect myself from crooks. Republicans buy guns to protect themselves from the truth!
