Biggest Stadium In Division, "One Double A"!

I am having a, "Schadenfreude" moment. The word means you are feeling good about someone else's misery. And I'm enjoying the misery of all, BYU fans tonight. They have shot themselves in the head, because Utah got a BCS Conference invite, and they didn't. And so, they went independent, and tossed all their other sports programs into something called, The West Coast Conference that has a lot of, "faith based, Universities".

They have, Crew, but not, Softball. So can the girls that are playing, Softball at, BYU learn to row on Utah Lake? Or are they just shit out of luck?

This is SO good for, Utah fans! TSDS has just made itself TOTALLY irrelevant to college sports in Utah! They do NOT exist. Even in football.

Who are they going to recruit? Only the guy I went to high school with that was wearing a, "Keep On Trackting" (Instead of, "trucking", it was the 70's) Tshirt and can't imagine going anywhere else, because he's a Mormon before anything else, is going to go to that school to play football. They will NEVER recruit anyone who seriously thinks they can play in the NFL.

Good grief, these, Mormons think that outside of Utah and some parts of Southern Idaho, anyone takes them seriously? Really?

They claim that their network, "BYUTV" has access in 60 million homes. Well, I went and found it on MY satellite TV. It's channel 64 on, Direct TV. But like in the other 59 million homes who have never, ever looked for it, I didn't even know I had it! And I sure as hell won't WATCH it! I heard it described as, "The place your mother watches, Little House On The Prairie" reruns. No one is going to PAY for this!

I know, I've heard the, "Notre Dame is independent" argument. Mormons? Are you listening? You are NOT, Catholics! You don't have millions and millions of members all over the world, and in THIS country where they actually WATCH college football!

You have millions of members, but most of them don't have TV's and live in Third World Countries where they are members only because you FEED THEM! You are NOT, Notre Dame. This is going to backfire on you, BIGTIME!

Boy, this is such a total mistake, I cant' even put it into words! I bet it doesn't last three years. Then, the, Cougars are going to be BEGGING to get back into the MWC, or even the WAC, if IT still exists.

Hoisted on your own ego.

Look, BYU, you're a joke of a, "University". No one wants you in their conference. You are NEVER going to the Big 12. Or anywhere else. And it's NOT because you won't play on, Sunday. It's because you suck. And you have too much ego, and not enough humility. And outside of Utah, nobody gives a SHIT about you!

But they will be buying, "Utah" Tshirts in California and Texas soon. The University OF Utah is THE University IN Utah these days.

Enjoy your roll as, "also ran" in the year end review of sports in this state.

Oh, bye the way? You might not get to see your men's basketball games on the road, since they are playing in gym's that aren't up to the standards of, Murray High. So they might not have not have the lights required for TV.

Good move! Now you have to live with it. Good luck.

Orrin Hatch Is Right. That's The Last Time I'll EVER Say That, I'm Sure.

Orrin Hatch is the Devil as far as I'm concerned. He's wrong about EVERYTHING, and he's just a right wing ideologue, who's going to say anything he can to undermine anything that a Democrat wants to do, even if he knows, in his, tiny, black, heart that it's right.

That being said, this week, he proved that deep down inside of himself, he CAN still be a Statesman, and do the right thing.

The guy who ten plus years ago pushed legislation that allowed religious organizations to build pretty much, what ever they wanted on private property they had purchased, as long as it met the local building requirements, even if the locals didn't want it, stood by his own guns this week, in spite of the hate it's going to bring him from the, Tea Baggers and stood up for the Muslim Community Center in Manhattan.

Wow! Orrin did the right thing, even in a year when, Bob Bennett got the boot from the nutcake right wing in this state for simply wanting to negotiate with, Democrats? I, as a dedicated, left wing, Liberal, Progressive, who's even vacationed in, Cuba applaud his integrity. Good for you, Orrin. No, I'm not sending a check.

I don't remember which Temple the, Mormons wanted to build for sure. Washington DC, Dallas, I don't know. But the local zoning laws were being met, and yet the locals didn't want those, non-Christian Mormons to build in their neighborhood. The spire was too high was one of the arguments, I remember that.

So, Orrin rode in to the rescue, and passed a FEDERAL LAW (Tea Baggers HATE the Fed's, NOW!) that said that as long as the local standards are being met, religious organizations could build ANYWHERE they had property. Even if the locals didn't want them there.

And this week, he showed that it's not just, Mormon's he was trying to protect. He's going to bat for the, Muslim's TOO! Good on ya, Orrin! Good for the, Goose, good for the, Gander! You stuck to your principles, even here in Utah, on local TV, where you can't POSSIBLY lose an election.

Now, go national. Go on, "Good Morning America" or any of the Sunday morning political shows you like so much, or NPR and say the same thing. Tell the world that the, Muslim's have the right to build there, and they should because religious freedom is one of the reasons we HAVE this country.

You do that, and I'll have some respect for you.

Now, all of that being said, there is a Mosque FOUR blocks from, "Ground Zero". Is THAT far enough? And if not? How far is far enough?

And why does no one seem to know that the only church actually destroyed in the 9-11 attack was, Greek Orthodox? Where's the outrage?

I've been to, Manhattan. You can't see two blocks in that town, in any direction. Too many buildings. Get over it.

Snow Tires. Look into it.

I have a HUGE bird feeder on the fence on my patio. Holds about a gallon of sunflower hearts, or, shelled sunflower seeds. I can watch all the birds from the neighborhood feed there. And the hawks that feed on the birds from the neighborhood, feed there too. The circle of life.

When we had this set up in West Jordan, and my daughter was really little, maybe eight or nine, it was right outside the big bay window that was our dinning room. And one Thanksgiving morning, Meagan was looking at all the pretty birds, and a, Sharp Shinned Hawk busted in, grabbed a little bird, and started to devour it.

Meg was kind of freaked out, looking at me like, "Daddy? WTF?" I just told her to think about, "The Lion King", Which we had just seen, and, "The circle of life". I think she got it, but she didn't like it up close and in person.

Well, now, I have been watching this bird feeder for nine years, down here by the river in Murray. And I've learned some shit. My neighbor, Ernie has one that doesn't HANG it has a stand under it, and he and, Cathy get more, Goldfinches than I do.

Mine hangs, I get the, Red wing Blackbirds he doesn't.

And all summer long, the birds will eat here, but mostly at evening, and there will not be a lot of them. I fill it every couple of days. Doves, House Finches, Sparrows, Red wing Blackbirds, everything that lives down here.

In the winter, I only have to fill it once or twice a week. With so many birds going south, there are not that many to clean it out.

I have the pattern down. But not THIS year.

Since the middle of August, I have gone through two, 45 pound bags of bird feed. And this shit does not cost, "Chicken feed". Sunflower Hearts are $46 a 45 pound bag! This HUGE feeder I have gets emptied EVERY day!

Today was the worst. I filled it at about three o'clock this afternoon, and I was sitting on the patio, reading, "Mother Jones" magazine and listening to, "Outlaw Country" on satellite radio at eight o'clock tonight, and it was empty!

Do you remember how the, Indian's around here used to forecast a cold winter by looking at the, "Woolly Worm" caterpillar's? Still the best fly fishing lure ever, by the way.

And how the Pioneers had, "omens" that would for tell a, "bad" winter?

Well, I'm an atheist, and I don't believe in supernatural bullshit. But I DO believe that if you've lived in a place long enough, you can tell what signs nature is showing you. And I think that the sign that the birds in my neighborhood are sending me is, "You human units are in for some SHIT this winter! It's going to snow more than you know, and it's going to get REALLY cold, and we're bulking up now for an early flight south. Good luck, Suckers! And thanks for all the, swell food."

So based on nothing but, "bird behavior", I'd advise you to buy snow tires, lay in some wood for the days the power goes out, and get some gas for the, "Blow Snower", because I think we're going to need it!

Me? I already got my truck load of wood as I always do in August before the good wood is gone (cedar and pinion). And I have the extension pole to clean windows that now only keeps snow off the satellite dish so I can watch college football since I don't own a two story house. And I bought the, Audi with, "Quattro" the year I retired, and, "High Performance All Season Tires" last year.

I married a Mormon, so we have SO much food in the basement! It's almost crazy.

I have a safe full of guns and ammo. Just so in the event of a total disaster, I could shoot my Mormon neighbors, and take THEIR food storage.

But I digress. Global climate change is a reality. And if we don't change things, this scenario could happen. I don't see it this year. So I'm pulling your leg.

But, seriously? In nine years here, I've never seen the birds act like this in August. Just something to think about.

BYU Ego

The BYU Cougars have just shot themselves in the head, and at the same time, killed the Mountain West Conference. All because their ego wouldn't be patient enough to let them wait two years until the MWC is a BCS Automatic Qualifier.

Yeah, the MWC lost, Utah this summer to the PAC 10/12. And as a Ute fan, I'm REALLY happy about that. It is because we have proven ourselves athletically, academically and in the field of research, not just because of football. But, it's awesome.

But that shouldn't hurt the MWC, or more appropriately, it DIDN'T hurt the MWC. You got, Boise State University to replace us. Now, no one will argue that a school that 20 years ago was a Community College is going to bring everything to the table the Utes did. But I'm just talking about football. And in college sports? Football is EVERYTHING. The level of competition in THAT sport was not hurt. Folks in, Boise might argue it was improved, since they knocked off TCU last year in the Fiesta Bowl.

And the BCS is in the middle of a four year evaluation to see if the MWC is good enough to be an AQ. So far so good. The Cougars have averaged a #15 ranking at the end of the last two seasons, Utah won 2 BCS games coming out of this conference. BSU has won two BCS Bowl Games coming INTO this conference. TCU's national ranking has been high for years now. What's not to love?

Hell, this conference, top to bottom, is already better than, The Big East or the, ACC. You keep the current line up? Man, the MWC is going to the Fiesta Bowl or BETTER, every year!

Stay put, Cougars! Just be patient, and you'll have a shot at a BCS Bowl game EVERY year, not just if you go undefeated. And you're adding, Fresno State and Nevada to be great, natural rivals to, SDSU and UNLV? This could be a GREAT conference with great rivalries once BYU and BSU stir up some hate for each other. Boy, I see nothing but good things for this conference in the future, even though my team is leaving.

Nope. Not going to happen. BYU's ego got in the way. Utah got picked for a BCS conference, why didn't we! Insert stamping of feet and holding of breath noises here.

So, they will go independent in football, and send all the sports that no one cares about, back to the WAC! While giving Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno, a reason to STAY in the WAC (after all, BSU and Hawaii proved you can get to a BCS Bowl Game from THERE. You just can't get to one from PROVO!) and TCU a reason to ask, "WTF are we in THIS conference?" Good question. I asked it when they INVITED you! Good luck in CUSA, TCU, because, Texas doesn't want any more recruiting competition in that state, so you ain't getting into a revamped, "Big 12". Trust me.

The massive ego they have down there! Do they honestly, think that the national media, and the BCS is going to treat them like they do, Notre Dame? Well, in a word? Yeah. They expect that they have that kind of influence, on a national level since they already have their own network, "BYU TV" which is seen in some 50 million homes. Because it's given to cable/Satellite networks for free in an effort to spread the, "Good Word". And those networks can carry it for nothing, so they can say they offer, "X" number of channels. BYUTV is NOT, NBC. Which is carried on EVERY cable/satellite system! BYU is to, Notre Dame, as, BYUTV is to NBC. Not even in the same ballpark. County. Country. SOLAR SYSTEM!

You think they will want to carry it for free when there are only about 6 million Mormons in the whole country, and BYU wants to start charging for it? And selling advertising? In a word? Nope. There will have to be monetary remuneration to the systems if you want to make a buck by using them.

And no one, outside of Utah gives a shit about BYU. Let's face it. No one cares! They are not mentioned in the same breath with, Notre Dame, Boston College, or even, Gonzaga or, Baylor. They come in somewhere around, Liberty University, or, Bob Jones University. And they wonder why the PAC didn't want them? That and spending millions of dollars hating Gay people in in California.

The, "Big 10/12" has, Baylor and they didn't want them. They will NEVER want, BYU.

And what Bowl Game do you expect to go to if you have a good season, Cougars? Hell, Notre Dame has to finish ranked 8 or better to get a shot at a BCS game every year. You don't have that deal. And you never will, by the way. And without it, and all of the above, you can be sure the BCS rankings will NEVER let that happen.

And with no conference championship to compete for, what's you goal at the end of the season? Hoping some conference with six or eight guaranteed Bowl Games doesn't have enough teams with six wins so you can play in the, "Kraft Foods End Hunger Bowl" in San Francisco on January 8th?

Oh, by the way? That's now the WORST possible scenario for the Utes with a six win season. And since my wife grew up in, The Bay Area, the Bowl game she hopes we get EVERY year. But she's a Cougar, so I should expect as much.

So, Cougars you have made a move that makes sure you continue to be the most hated school in America. You have shit all over the other schools that stuck with you when the MWC was formed. You have come crawling back to the WAC, while we go to the PAC.

And the other thing that might happen now, if BSU and the others decide to stay in the WAC? The MWC schools might have to merge with them AGAIN, and create the same kind of cluster f*** that lead to the formation of the MWC in the first place!

Oh, Cougars. You are SO going to regret not staying right where you are. It's your ONLY hope to ever have a shot at a BCS game. And you are just too high on your own ego to see it.

Can you say, Division one, double, A? I thought you could!

A Modist Proposal, for Collage Football

Next year, the, Utes will start play in the, PAC 12. And the only reason the, PAC 10 feels compelled to become the, PAC 12, is that with 12 teams, instead of 10, they can hold a Conference Championship Game, and that means BIG money from TV for their Championship Game.

Now, anyone who reads this blog knows that I think this still sucks, even though we're, "IN". I think we need a 16 team playoff, but for right now? It's not going to happen.

So, since we're now a part of it, I have a proposition for the guys in charge of the, Pacific Athletic Conference. Have our Conference Championship Game in Las Vegas every year.

Yeah, I know, you think it deserves better, but hear me out.

Las Vegas is a day drive from 7 of the 12 schools in the conference, and a short flight from the rest. Las Vegas is a, "destination" location. People will go there even if they DON'T care about football.

The weather there in the first or second week in December is AWESOME!

It would only take your THINKING about it to make the, Las Vegas Tourism And Vistitors Bureau salivate.

You don't think THAT game every year would get the Tourist Bureau to convince the guys who own the casino's to put up enough money to, "spruce up", Sam Boyd Stadium? Maybe make it 50K seats instead of the 40K it has now? Some, Luxury boxes?

Hell, the, "Las Vegas Bowl" is BEFORE Christmas, because you don't want to sell rooms to low rollers between, Christmas and New Years if you held it THEN! So, you LV high rollers could sell ANOTHER week in December, for the PAC 12 Championship, BEFORE Christmas.

And the winner of the game is going to the Rose Bowl! OR, the BCS Championship game! How is that NOT a winner for an expanded, Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas?

I'd go every year, even if the Utes were NOT in it! I have a condo/time share down there, I don't use enough. Just to place a bet, and watch, Rita Rudner!

If you don't do this, Las Vegas, you are making a major mistake.

Oh, and this blog is now, copyrighted! Just so you can't say you thought of it first.

I'm not kidding, but I WILL sell this idea to you, for the right price. What stays in Vegas, sometimes starts in Utah.

"Mosque" Curious?

Boy, the outrage today from the Republican Right (oh, OK, the, "Tea Baggers", since they define the, Republican Party now) about the, "Mosque At Ground Zero"! You have wackaloons saying that it's an outrage! And other wackaloons saying that we should quit issuing building permits for ANY, Mosque in this country! Wow! Really?

The Muslim's are crazy, no doubt. But, in my opinion, so are the Catholics, the Greeks, the Jews, the Presbyterians, and, the Mormons! Especially, the Mormons! I married one, I know!

We should treat all religions the same in this country, according to our tax code. So does this mean that we, as you, "R's" suggest, stop the building of any houses of worship (would be, "War Ship" if you asked me)? I mean, you deny the Muslim's the right, but WHY only the Muslim's? Because they attacked us? Some of them did, but most of them didn't.

The Mormon's invaded Mexico in 1847, but the Mexicans didn't try to drive them out of their country.

Funny thing is, now that the Mexicans want it back? The Mormon's don't want to go, "home" to New York, or, Ohio, or, Missouri or any of the other places that drove THEM out. They want the Mexicans to go HOME! Go figure.

I saw a great bumper sticker today. "Religion: You can't have a war without one" and it's SO right!

So, if you've never been to, Manhattan Island, and most of you who are pissed off about this have NOT, I'm sure, it's a pretty POPULATED place. Two blocks on THIS island? Is like 40 blocks in Salt Lake City. The place they are going to build an, Islamic Cultural Center is two blocks from, "Ground Zero". That's a long way. It's a $4 cab ride.

I've been to, "Ground Zero". and it's still just a hole in the ground because no one can figure out WHAT to build there. Ten years after the event, it's still a hole in the ground.

The Muslim's have moved on, why haven't we?

Religion is bullshit. ALL of them. Yet we let it influence our thinking to the point that we can't see the good things some religions try to do, even when they are not ours.

ALL the bad shit in the world is caused by religion. ALL of it. BUT, sometimes, I believe, PEOPLE who ARE religious, try to do the right thing, motivated by their Religious beliefs. The Muslim's in New York want to build a cultural center to serve the WHOLE community. OK, let them do it. I still think they're crazy, but if they want to reach out to he community and try to do good things? OK. What's wrong with that?

It's too close to where a bad thing happened? Boy, I hope there are no Buddhist Church's on the island where, Pearl Harbor was. That would be bad. And we all know it's OK to hate the Buddhist's and Japanese these days.

Republicans need to look up, "hypocrisy". And while they're at it, "tyranny". And if they DO have books in their houses, which I doubt, find a copy of, The Constitution, and read the 14th Amendment. Because, as THEY say, it's, "Divinely inspired". And you wouldn't want to CHANGE that! Would you?
