Orrin Hatch is the Devil as far as I'm concerned. He's wrong about EVERYTHING, and he's just a right wing ideologue, who's going to say anything he can to undermine anything that a Democrat wants to do, even if he knows, in his, tiny, black, heart that it's right.
That being said, this week, he proved that deep down inside of himself, he CAN still be a Statesman, and do the right thing.
The guy who ten plus years ago pushed legislation that allowed religious organizations to build pretty much, what ever they wanted on private property they had purchased, as long as it met the local building requirements, even if the locals didn't want it, stood by his own guns this week, in spite of the hate it's going to bring him from the, Tea Baggers and stood up for the Muslim Community Center in Manhattan.
Wow! Orrin did the right thing, even in a year when, Bob Bennett got the boot from the nutcake right wing in this state for simply wanting to negotiate with, Democrats? I, as a dedicated, left wing, Liberal, Progressive, who's even vacationed in, Cuba applaud his integrity. Good for you, Orrin. No, I'm not sending a check.
I don't remember which Temple the, Mormons wanted to build for sure. Washington DC, Dallas, I don't know. But the local zoning laws were being met, and yet the locals didn't want those, non-Christian Mormons to build in their neighborhood. The spire was too high was one of the arguments, I remember that.
So, Orrin rode in to the rescue, and passed a FEDERAL LAW (Tea Baggers HATE the Fed's, NOW!) that said that as long as the local standards are being met, religious organizations could build ANYWHERE they had property. Even if the locals didn't want them there.
And this week, he showed that it's not just, Mormon's he was trying to protect. He's going to bat for the, Muslim's TOO! Good on ya, Orrin! Good for the, Goose, good for the, Gander! You stuck to your principles, even here in Utah, on local TV, where you can't POSSIBLY lose an election.
Now, go national. Go on, "Good Morning America" or any of the Sunday morning political shows you like so much, or NPR and say the same thing. Tell the world that the, Muslim's have the right to build there, and they should because religious freedom is one of the reasons we HAVE this country.
You do that, and I'll have some respect for you.
Now, all of that being said, there is a Mosque FOUR blocks from, "Ground Zero". Is THAT far enough? And if not? How far is far enough?
And why does no one seem to know that the only church actually destroyed in the 9-11 attack was, Greek Orthodox? Where's the outrage?
I've been to, Manhattan. You can't see two blocks in that town, in any direction. Too many buildings. Get over it.
